There are a number of excellent options for getting to and from Whittier.
- Private or Rental Vehicle: Whittier is roughly an hour south of Anchorage. This is an enjoyable drive along scenic Turnagain Arm on the Seward Highway, designated as a National Scenic Byway. The Whittier tunnel is generally open from 8:30am-10:00pm during the winter, and from 6:00am-11:00pm during the summer. The tunnel is only one lane wide and more than two miles long, so traffic is allowed through on an hourly schedule. Inbound traffic is released on the half-hour. For precise tunnel information visit the Alaska DOT web site.
- Daily Rail Service: The Alaska Railroad's Glacier Discovery train leaves Anchorage daily at 10:00am, arriving Whittier at noon. The return leg departs Whittier at 6:45pm ariving Anchorage at 9:30pm. This service is available seasonally from mid-May to mid-September and can be extended to include the ride down to scenic, remote Grandview for an optional float trip at Spencer Glacier.
